College of Science Milestones
1911 Tsing Hua Academy was founded; it was renamed as Tsing Hua School and National Tsing Hua University in 1912 and 1928, respectively. 1956 Institute of Nuclear Science was established during the relocation of Tsing Hua campus to Hsinchu. It constituted three academic sections, namely: Mathematics, Physics and Radiation Chemistry. 1963 Institute of Mathematics was founded, it offers Master program. 1964 Department of Mathematics was founded. 1965 Department of Physics was founded. 1966 Department of Chemistry and Institute of Physics were founded. Institute of Physics offers Master program. 1967 Institute of Physics offers Ph.D. program. 1968 1970 Institute of Chemistry was founded, it offers Master program. Department of Mathematics created the Applied Mathematics Division. 1972 Institutes of Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics and Applied Chemistry were founded. 1973 College of Science was founded and Dr. Chun-Shan Shen became the first dean, supervising all academic affairs related to Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Molecular Biology (1973-1979). 1974 Institute of Chemistry offers Ph.D. program. Institute of Molecular Biology was founded; it was renamed as Institute of Life Sciences in 1985, and then joined College of Life Sciences in 1992. 1977 Institute of Computer Management was founded, it offers Master program; it was renamed as Institute of Computer Science in 1988, and Institute of Computer Science integrated into Department of Computer Science in 1995. 1979 1980 Dr. Yuen-Chung Liu took office as second dean (1979-1982). Department of Chinese Literature was founded, and then joined College of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1984. 1982 Dr. Chao-Shiuan Liu took office as third dean (1982-1984). Institute of Mathematics offers Ph.D. program; Department of Foreign Language & Literature was founded, which was transferred to College of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1984. 1983 Institutes of Applied Physics and Applied Chemistry integrated into Institutes of Physics and Chemistry, respectively. 1984 Dr. Chun-Shan Shen appointed his second tenure as fourth dean (1984-1987). 1986 Institute of Applied Mathematics offers Ph.D. program. 1987 Dr. Hsin-Hsiung Chen took office as fifth dean (1987-1992). 1988 Institute of Statistics was founded, it offers Master program. 1989 Institute of Statistics offers Ph.D. program. 1990 1991 Department of Computer Science was founded, and then joined College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1998. Institute of Biomedicine was founded, it offers Master program, and then joined College of Life Science in 1992. Department of Life Science was founded and then joined College of Life Science in 1992. 1992 Dr. Chun-Chen Liao took office as sixth dean (1992-1998). 1995 Unification of departments and institutes. Institute of Physics, Institute of Chemistry were integrated into Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry respectively. 1996 Institutes of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics were integrated into Department of Mathematics. 1998 Dr. Sze-Bi Hsu took office as seventh dean (1998-2004). 2001 2003 Institute of Astronomy was founded, it offers Master program. Department of Physics created the Photoelectric Division. 2004 Dr. Shih-Lin Chang took office as eighth dean (2004-2007). 2006 CoS Bachelor of Science Program was founded. 2007 Dr. Huan-Chiu Ku took office as ninth dean (2007-2013). 2008 NTHU Center for Fundamental Science was founded (belongs to NTHU Research & Development Office). Science and Technology of Synchrotron Light Source M.S. Program supported jointly by the College of Nuclear Science was founded. 2009 2013 Institute of Astronomy offers Ph.D. program. Science & Technology of Synchrotron Light Source offers Ph.D. program. CoS Bachelor of Science Program was renamed as Interdisciplinary Program of Sciences.
